Child care staff shall ensure that potentially harmful items, including but not limited to matches, lighters, chemicals, materials labeled “harmful if swallowed,” flammable materials, sharp objects, and staffs’ personal belongings are locked or inaccessible to children.

The licensing coordinator observed, in the kitchen area within the Preschool classroom, there were two bottles of Clorox Disinfectant and Sanitizer, two bottles of Clean Smart Hospital Disinfectant, one bottle of Seventh Generation Cleaner, and one bottle of Prima Pro Carpet Cleaner, accessible to children in an unlocked cabinet under the sink. Staff immediately removed the items listed above and placed them in a location inaccessible to the children. A review of department records revealed the program received a similar citation during a monitoring visit on October 12, 2022. Corrective action: Moving forward, all closets and areas in the building which cleaning products, or other items that may pose a health or safety risk, are stored will remain locked at all times.

Any contaminated, expired, or discontinued medication, whether prescription or over-the-counter, and topical substances shall be returned to the child’s parents or, if belonging to the program, disposed of properly by authorized staff.

The licensing coordinator observed, in the Pre-K classroom, a bottle of Walgreen Children’s 24 Hour Allergy medication, which expired in October 2022 and was not returned to the child’s parent. Corrective action: Medications will be checked on a monthly basis & sent home immediately if found to be expired.

The licensing coordinator observed, in the bathrooms within the Preschool classroom, the soap next to the hand washing sinks were labeled “keep out of reach of children.” Corrective action: In the future, only hand soaps that do not include a “keep out of reach of children” disclaimer will be purchased and accessible to children.
