Any contaminated, expired, or discontinued medication, whether prescription or over-the-counter, and topical substances shall be returned to the child’s parents or guardians whenever possible or, if belonging to the program, disposed of properly by authorized staff.

The licensing coordinator observed expired albuterol liquid belonging to an enrolled child in the medication storage box. Corrective action: Upon notification, the expired medication was immediately removed from the classroom and sent home to the parents. We have our revised medication procedures and implemented a monthly medication check log that documents each medication’s expiration date, the teacher’s initials and date of review, and the Director’s initials and date to verify completion. This process applies to all medications throughout the center and ensures ongoing monitoring and compliance with medication storage and expiration requirements.
