Any contaminated, expired, or discontinued medication, whether prescription or over-the-counter, and topical substances shall be returned to the child’s parents or guardians whenever possible or, if belonging to the program, disposed of properly by authorized staff.
REPEAT CITATION PREVIOUSLY CITED ON DECEMBER 19, 2023. The licensing coordinator observed two Epi-Pens that expired in May 2025, which were not returned to the child’s parents or guardians or, if belonging to the program, disposed of properly by authorized staff. Corrective action: 1. Action taken to correct citation: Child #1: Epi-Pen carried in personal bag by 12yo child. Family of child notified of expired Epi-Pen, in person and in writing. A new Epi-Pen was provided to child on 10/6/2025, to carry in personal bag. Child#2: Family notified, in person and in writing, of expired Epi-Pen. New Epi-Pens provided to program on 10/7/2025. 2. Steps the program will take to ensure compliance in the future: Monthly medication check added to digital Outlook Calendar, recurring on the 30th of each month – event shared by Center Director and Program Coordinator. Check will include the following: Expiration Dates of medications in office cabinet Expiration dates of medications carried in designated group bags Expiration of medications in personal bags carried by children who meet the age requirements Medications of currently enrolled children ONLY are kept in office cabinet and designated group bags After the check is completed, the existing monthly log is to be initialed by the Center Director or Program Coordinator. Expiration dates for all medications of currently enrolled children added to digital Outlook Calendar. Reminders of upcoming expiration dates are set to occur on a weekly basis, starting a month in advance of expiration - prompting notification be sent to families in writing, via email. Written reminders will continue on a weekly basis, until new medications are provided to the program. Verbal communication will also take place as a secondary form of communication. 3.
