Any contaminated, expired, or discontinued medication, whether prescription or over-the-counter, and topical substances shall be returned to the child’s parents or, if belonging to the program, disposed of properly by authorized staff.
The licensing coordinator observed one expired diaper cream in the I-Todd classroom, seven expired diaper creams in the Toddler classroom, one expired EpiPen and one expired Benadryl in the Preschool classroom, and one expired EpiPen and one expired Allergy Relief in the Pre-Kindergarten classroom. Corrective action: We have corrected this issue by sending all expired meds/diaper creams home except the expired epi pen in Preschool. The expired epi-pen in Pre-K is a child who no longer needs an epi pen and we were waiting for confirmation from the allergist. That epi-pen and Benadryl has been sent home. I have requested new paperwork and epi pen for the child in Preschool. I have also printed a monthly check sheet (attached) for all classrooms in which they will initial and date monthly when they check expiration dates. We have added a calendar reminder to classroom iPhones to alert us a month before the epi-pens/meds (but not diaper creams) are set to expire to give parents time to refill prescriptions.
