Child care staff shall ensure that potentially harmful items, including but not limited to matches, lighters, chemicals, materials labeled “harmful if swallowed,” flammable materials, sharp objects, and staffs’ personal belongings are locked or inaccessible to children.
Program staff self-reported that Child A had obtained a two-ounce bottle of hand sanitizer and had potentially consumed it. Staff B confirmed that they observed the bottle in Child A's mouth, further stating that they were not aware that this product was present in the classroom. Staff A and Staff B both confirmed that the position of the classroom cubbies at the time created a blind spot in the classroom where staff were unable to see the children or the contents of the cubbies. Staff B and Staff C both indicated that the child was able to remove the sanitizer from the silicone sleeve attached to another child's bag, remove the cover, and put the bottle into their mouth without staff seeing this occur. Corrective action: All center staff were directed to check their students' cubbies and bags to ensure that any and all items from home that are deemed "harmful if swallowed/flammable" are inaccessible to children. They will continue to check cubbies regularly and be aware of the contents of their student's available belongings in order to keep everyone safe. All families were also notified and reminded to keep such items out of their child's belongings. If staff notice any belongings in children's cubbies that are not safe, they will remove the item, place it up and out of children's reach, and alert their child's parents of the new safe location until the parents can collect the item at pick up.
