Any contaminated, expired, or discontinued medication, whether prescription or over-the-counter, and topical substances shall be returned to the child’s parents or guardians whenever possible or, if belonging to the program, disposed of properly by authorized staff.
The licensing coordinator observed one expired Epi-Pen and one expired Allergy Relief in the Daisy classroom. Corrective action: Parents were immediately informed by teaching staff. New, unexpired medication was brought in and new forms filled out by the parents. To prevent this in the future, both the Director and the classroom teachers put the expiration date of all long term OTC and prescription medications on their calendars, one month prior to the actual expiration date. This will prevent expired medications from being in the center and this from happening in the future. Teachers currently include the expiration dates of diaper creams and other topical creams on the cream itself, alongside the child’s name, which has been working to monitor all topical ointments/creams.
