Child care staff shall nurture and encourage each child in care by providing each child with a variety of developmentally appropriate learning and social experiences and establishing and maintaining a learning environment that provides for the emotional well-being of each child.
The complainant stated that Staff A restrained Child A at a table in their classroom when Child A displayed undesirable behaviors. Staff A stated that they positioned themself behind Child A and put their arms around the child, placing their hands on the table to help redirect Child A's behavior and attention. Staff A also stated that they would use their leg to block Child A's chair from behind to prevent them from pushing backwards and getting up. Child A stated that they were held at the table when they weren't listening to Staff A or Staff B. In attempting to control Child A's behavior by restricting his ability to move freely through the classroom, program staff failed to provide behavior management by providing positive guidance, positively worded directions, and developmentally appropriate explanations for limits and rules. Corrective action: [The World of Discovery leadership] has re-emphasized to all program staff the importance of adhering to The World of Discovery’s policy of employing the Pyramid model to support children with different challenges. More specifically, utilizing positive reinforcement, processing through better choices and what leads a child to behave in an unsafe manner, moving to a different class to see if it was a personality conflict, sticker charts, prize box, meetings with parents that involved the child to let the child know that all were on the same page, asking the child to be the classroom helper and friend to new students, taking the child on walks to reset his mindset, giving the child heavy work (help carry grocery's, breaking down boxes, putting food up on shelves), and adding another teacher to the preschool to help support the child’s behaviors. Only the above approach is tolerated by the World of Discovery and such matters are routinely revisited regularly with each employee performance review to ensure full compliance as well as part of our usual and customary staff meetings. This has been and will continue to be the World of Discovery’s approach to such situation. Parents of children that require application of the Pyramid model approach shall also be informed of the methods that will be employed should the need arise in order to avoid future confusion.
