3270.101(a) · Play equipment and materials appropriate to the developmental needs, individual interests and ages of the children shall be provided in sufficient amount and variety to preclude long waits for use.
A group of 3-4 children in the two-year-old classroom were observed to have access to one bin of books. The books were against the wall. The children were not using the books and there were no other toys available at the time of the investigation. Children did not have direct access to any other toys. One container of toys was brought into the group space at a time. When the teacher was asked if this is the norm, the teacher's reply was yes. A group of 8 children in the Pre-K classroom were observed to have access to two bins: a bin of balls and a bin of trains/tracks. The children did not seem interested in the balls and were not playing with them. All children were playing with the bin of trains and tracks. There were not enough trains or tracks available for all children to play without long periods of waiting. There was not a sufficient amounts of tracks or trains for children to create tracks and run their trains on the tracks. In a room adjacent to the Pre-K room, there was a group of 7 three-year-old children. There were no toys out for children to use. All toys were put away. When asked, staff explained that there was not enough room for centers or toys to be out because the space is used for napping.
