This visit was conducted by Karen Young, Childcare Consultant with Rebecca Dodd, lead teacher. Your program currently operates with a FIVE(5) Star license effective 4/1/20. Restrictions include 1st shift daytime care only; meets enhanced ratios; meets enhanced space; meets one less than enhanced standards. The license was observed, and the restrictions were found in compliance. The program’s compliance history was 99% prior to today’s visit. All programs are required to maintain at least 75% compliance. A walk-through of the facility was completed today. Indoor and outdoor areas were observed. Staff/child ratio and space capacity were monitored as indicated on the attached worksheet. Supervision was adequate during the visit. I observed positive interactions today. I observed children having free choice center play, morning snack, and outdoor gross motor play. I observed developmentally appropriate materials and activities were available to the children in the classrooms. Your program was also monitored for compliance with implementing an approved curriculum as required for all four- and five-star licensed facilities where four-year-old children are enrolled. Your facility uses Creative Curriculum with Teaching Strategies Gold. The last annual compliance visit was conducted on 9/11/23. A sanitation inspection was completed 2/12/24 with a Superior classification and thirteen (13) demerits. The last fire inspection was conducted 2/6/24. Program records and required postings were monitored. A fire drill was conducted on 8/29/24 at 9:00 am with two (2) minute and nine(9) seconds to evacuate eighteen(18) children and three (3) adults by R. Dodd. A Lockdown emergency drill was documented on 6/3/24 at 10: 15 am with twenty (20) seconds to lockdown. An outdoor inspection was documented on 8/26/24 with one (1) item noted, regarding chipping paint on picnic tables. One (1) staff file and two (2) children’s records were monitored per DCDEE procedures. Nutrition requirements were monitored per DCDEE procedures. Storage of hazardous items was monitored today. No medications were observed nor reported. You stated that you do provide transportation in the am & pm for NC Pre-K children. During today’s visit, I observed the DPI Off-Site Records Verification form as well as the Transportation Requirements signed 8/20/24, by Eric M. Barker, Director of Transportation for Wilkes County Schools. I observed the Center Director Responsibilities and Procedures form signed by new principal Robert Michael Weddington on 8/15/24 and bus drivers, Donnie Blevins & Pamela Gonzalez. Transportation Policies for Parents were signed and observed in children’s files who ride the bus to and from school. The following violation was cited during today’s visit: Violation Number Comment Rule 721 All equipment and furnishings were not in good repair. I observed the outdoor Rubermaid cabinet door had come off the hinges and was not able to close properly. I observed rust on the picnic tables and rough edges.This item has been listed on multiple playground inspections last year and staff were told it would be remedied in the summer. It has not been done as of today 9/4/24. This visit was conducted by Karen Young, Childcare Consultant, with Rebecca Dodd, lead teacher. Your program currently operates with a FIVE (5) Star license effective 4/1/20. Restrictions include 1st shift, daytime care; meets enhanced ratios; meets enhanced space; meets one less than enhanced standards. The program’s compliance history was 98% prior to today’s visit. All programs are required to maintain at least 75% compliance. No new staff were reported at this program. There is a new principal at this school as of January 2, 2024. I am requesting updated staff & Training worksheets from Ms. Dodd. I have received the principal’s administrator information from Allison Wingerson, NC Pre-K Coordinator of Wilkes County. No medications were observed nor reported. Storage hazardous items was monitored today. A playground inspection was recorded 1/23/24 by R. Dodd. A fire drill was recorded 2/2/24 at 2:30 pm with one (1) minute and twenty-four (24) seconds to evacuate eighteen (18) children and two (2) adults. The current NC Pre-K staff are lead teacher, Rebecca Dodd who holds a Master’s degree in Early Childhood and teacher, Angel Joines, who currently holds an Associates in Early Childhood with additional courses in early childhood and is pursuing her teaching degree. A selection of files was monitored on the last Annual Compliance visit for completed health assessments and developmental screenings. You stated all Dial Screenings were in the children’s folders. The center uses the Teaching Strategies Gold instrument to document evidence of children's ongoing progress and documentation was viewed today. The checkpoint assessments are conducted three times per year: at the beginning, middle and end of the school year (October, February, and May). The first day of school this year was 8/28/23. Parent conferences are held two times per year. You stated that you use daily folders with notes, also texts, phone calls, the Class Dojo app, or email to communicate with parents. You verified that you incorporate family engagement by also conducting home visits, if the teacher desires, and sending notes or making phone calls to children’s homes weekly or as needed.
