Name of Operation: KNIGHTDALE ELEMENTARY Facility ID: 92003628 Consultant: MICHELLE EZZELL Operation Type: Center Case Number: Visit Date: 5/15/2024 Number Present: 16 Completed Date: 5/15/2024 Age: From 4 To 5 Total Minutes: 75 Time In: 11:35 AM Time Out: 12:50 PM Time In: Time Out: List to Use: Center Type Of Visit: Annual Comp Full Announced/Unannounced: Unannounced The purpose of today’s visit was to monitor the facilities NC Pre-K classroom. Today’s visit was conducted with Ms. Bailey and Ms. Williams. Upon arrival, Angela Griffin with the Office of Early Learning was present. The facility currently operates with a 4-star license. A checklist was used to monitor compliance during my visit. The children were observed in circle time learning about recycling and later eating lunch. The facility currently has one (classroom #143) NC Pre-K classroom. Environment rating scales were completed on 1-9-20 with a score of 5.3. The facility operates a minimum of 6.5 hours a day, attendance is taken, USDA approved meals are served, and menus are planned at least one week in advance. The center uses Creative Curriculum, Teaching Strategies. *****Inspections on file: *The facilities last annual fire inspection was on 1-30-24. Scan me any fire inspections 5 days within days of the inspection. *The Facilities last sanitation inspection was on 9-8-23. Remember to scan me all of your sanitation inspections within 5 days of completion. A water test for lead was submitted on 4-2-21 and is pending completion. *The last fire drill was on 4-26-24 & Shelter-in-place was on 4-16-24. *The last outdoor playground inspection was completed on 4-5-24 by Anne Bailey. Ms. Bailey completed playground safety training on 7-12-23. The following violations were observed and corrected during the visit. Violation Number Comment Rule 812 Electrical outlets and power strips, not in use, which were located in space used by children did not have safety outlets or were not covered with safety plugs unless located behind furniture or equipment that cannot be moved by a child. An electrical strip located beside the small refrigerator in the classroom had a total of six outlets, four (4) were uncovered and two (2) were in use. 10A NCAC 09 .0604(c) 840 All corrosive agents, pesticides, bleaches, detergents, cleansers, polishes, any product which is under pressure in an aerosol dispenser, and any substance which may be hazardous to a child if ingested, inhaled, or handled were not stored in a locked room or cabinet. In a blue unlocked cabinet located beside the sink, the following chemicals with warning labels that read "keep out of reach of children" were observed and accessible to children: a gallon of bleach, Super instant absorbent power, Oxivir wipes, and disinfectant spray. .2820(b) The following technical assistance was discussed with both staff members: *Electrical Outlets-When unused electrical outlets are not in use, they’re required to have safety outlets. all electrical outlets, including those on power strips, not in use that are in areas accessible to children must be protected with a safety plug or should be classified as a tamper-resistant electrical outlet. *Storage of Hazardous Items-Items that require locked storage were improperly stored in the unlocked cabinet in classroom. Ms. Bailey stated the lock is difficult to lock and will put in a work order to have it repaired. During today’s visit. Ms. Bailey was able to lock the cabinet. Ms. Williams stated the cleaning supplies/chemicals can be moved to the office, since the office door can be locked. It is extremely important that staff take the required time to lock cabinets, and store hazardous items properly either in locked storage or five feet from the finished floor. *We discussed that child/staff ratios must be in compliance at all times. If a staff member needs to leave the classroom to get lunch, another staff member must come in the classroom to maintain ratios OR both teachers can stay in the classroom and have another employee deliver lunch/snack to the classroom. A 3rd option could be the teacher will have to take some children with her to run the errand. Ratios are 1:9 or 2:18. Ratios and group sizes help ensure that a child gets enough one-on-one attention from an adult who is available to take care of each child’s unique needs. This responsive caregiving is extremely important to a child’s social and emotional development, physical well-being, and overall learning. *Two criminal background checks will expire in 2024. These can be completed up to 6 months prior to the expiration date on the letter. *****LICENSE REMINDERS: *Your license falls under COHORT #2. The planning year is between 7-1-24 to 6-30-25 and must be completed 6-30-26. * EDUCATION STANDARDS: Remember it is your responsibility to make sure all NC Pre-k Staff’s education standards are current in DCDEE’s database/WORKS/WORKFORCE. I suggest you log into the WORKS program to see if staff’s education standards are on file. *PROGRAM STANDARDS: For helpful hints and workshops, go to NCRLAP.org.
