Name of Operation: MISS LINDSEY'S CHILDCARE & AFTER SCHOOL LLC Facility ID: 54000340 Consultant: TINA JONES Operation Type: Center Case Number: Visit Date: 9/19/2024 Number Present: 45 Completed Date: 9/19/2024 Age: From 1 To 4 Total Minutes: 165 Time In: 09:00 AM Time Out: 11:45 AM Time In: Time Out: List to Use: Center Type Of Visit: Annual Comp Full Announced/Unannounced: Unannounced The purpose of today’s visit was to monitor compliance during an annual compliance visit. A checklist was used to note the requirements I monitored today. The staff/training worksheets were emailed prior to the visit. Currently this center operates with a Three Star License, issued March 24, 2023, earning 4 points in the Education Component, 2 points in the Program Component and 1 Quality point based on the program using an approved curriculum. The last annual compliance visit was conducted September 25, 2023. The last sanitation inspection was completed July 3, 2024, with a “Approved” classification. The last fire inspection was completed August 29,2024, and the facility was approved for daytime care only. The previous fire inspection was completed on July 10, 2023. As a reminder, approved fire inspections must be completed annually and prior to the expiration of the previous inspection. You, L. Whitley, Owner/Administrator, were present, assisted with today’s visit, and you were available for consultation at the conclusion of the visit. Children were observed during morning group activities, free play in centers, completing transitions and routines such as handwashing and toileting. Children enrolled in space 4, ranging in age from three to four years of age were observed sitting at the table completing morning lessons. The morning lessons began at 9:30am and lasted for over an hours. We reviewed developmentally appropriate practices in regard to worksheets, group times, redirection, and self-select activities. This program consists of four (4) classrooms. Prior to today’s visit, the program’s compliance history was 99% over the current 18- month period. A copy of your compliance history report was left with you. The center is owned and operated by Miss Lindsey’s Childcare & After School LLC with a current-active status based on today’s research in the North Carolina Secretary of State database and found to have a Current/Active Status. I used the Annual Compliance Monitoring Checklist for Child Care and the Child Care Center Item Number Listing (DCD 0357) as a basic monitoring tool to assess compliance with all applicable child care requirements. Violations documented were reviewed with you at the conclusion of the visit. A copy of this computer- generated Visit Summary was left with you. The following violation was documented: Violation Number Comment Rule 106 Operator has not scheduled and obtained a fire inspection within 12 months of the previous inspection. Operator did not submit the original approved report to DCDEE within one week of the inspection visit on a form provided by the Division. The annual fire inspection completed on 8/29/2024, was not completed prior to the expiration of the previous fire inspection dated 7/20/2023. 10A NCAC 09 .0304(a) CONSULTATION AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE: Child care licensing requirements are established to ensure a safe and healthy child care environment. Therefore, it is important for you to be knowledgeable of all the licensing requirements that apply to your type of program. It is your responsibility to maintain compliance with the applicable laws and rules; always whether they have been monitored or specifically discussed with you in the past. The best way for you to ensure that you are meeting all requirements is to periodically review the child care laws and rules on the Division of Child Development and Early Education’s website. RESOURCES: FREE PLAY / SELF-SELECT ACTIVITIES: Free Play is also known as “child-led learning,” “child-directed play,” or “unstructured play.” In contrast to guided play, children choose games and activities of their own interest without an expected learning outcome from an adult. Free play can happen anywhere, as long as the child controls their play experience. During free play, the teacher can ensure safety in the play environment. The teacher can also observe each child’s activity, noting which skills they’re mastering and their developmental needs. They can also ask open-ended questions to prompt critical thinking, provide scaffolding to support progress, and help with tasks that may seem difficult—without doing the activity for the child or taking over the activity. The most important benefits from free play include: -Encourages brain development and creativity. -Helps children learn and practice self-regulation -Improves problem-solving -Develops physical abilities -Improves social & communication skills -Enhances language development -Encourages independence I observed the preschool aged children completing worksheets during group time. Children were instructed to sit at the table and during the observation, children completed two worksheets. We reviewed that the children were losing interest, and some children were demonstrating some behavioral issues. We reviewed children can lose interest in worksheets easily and that is when behavioral issues develop. We reviewed that worksheet do not accommodate all learners and worksheets can discourage those important socialization skills. I encourage you to review with your teaching staff to build lesson plans that prioritize developmentally appropriate and hands-on activities that engage the children enrolled in each classroom. I recommend you contacting the Partnership for Children of Lenoir and Greene Counties for technical assistance with free play, lesson planning, redirection, and developmentally appropriate practice. You may contact Stephanie Sullivan or Taylor Bowen at (252) 939-1200.
