Name of Operation: KING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Facility ID: 85000085 Consultant: KELLY HEALY Operation Type: Center Case Number: Visit Date: 2/8/2024 Number Present: 28 Completed Date: 2/8/2024 Age: From 3 To 5 Total Minutes: 200 Time In: 11:10 AM Time Out: 02:30 PM Time In: Time Out: List to Use: Center Type Of Visit: Annual Comp Full Announced/Unannounced: Unannounced An unannounced visit was conducted at this child care today to monitor compliance with all applicable childcare requirements. This visit was conducted with Ms. Marcia Saunders, Lead Teacher. This program currently operates with a Four Star license. Restrictions include daytime care only, certified dev day 1:6, meets enhanced space, meets enhanced ratios. The license was posted and the restrictions were being followed. The NC Secretary of State website was reviewed on 02-08-2024. The Regulatory System is down and I am unable to look at the compliance history. Programs are required to achieve and maintain an eighteen-month compliance history score of at least seventy-five percent. I have observed indoor and outdoor areas today. I monitored staff/child ratios and space capacity today, as is indicated on the attached worksheet. I observed proper supervision of children. During the visit I observed children playing with toys, napping, using the bathroom and eating. The last annual compliance visit was conducted on 02-22-2023. The last sanitation inspection was conducted on 11-21-2023. The last fire inspection was conducted on 10-26-2023. A fire drill was documented on 01-12-2024. A shelter in place drill was documented on 01-09-2024. An outdoor inspection was documented on 01-29-2024. I observed program records and posted items today. I observed staff and children’s records today according to DCDEE procedures. I observed the storage of hazardous items and cleaning supplies. I observed both the storage of medications and the administration of medication paperwork. This program does not provide transportation. This is an NC Pre-K site, with a Four Star License issued 12-18-2018. The developmental screening that the staff is using is Teaching Strategies Gold. The curriculum the staff is using is Creative Curriculum. The Formative Assessment the staff is using is Teaching Strategies Gold. The teachers work 40 hours per week. The family engagement activities include: monthly newsletters, parents coming to speak about their jobs, math nights, literacy nights, social/emotional nights and spring festival. Two lead teachers have B.S. degrees in Birth through Kindergarten. One Lead teacher has an M.A. in Reading. All Teacher Assistants have AAS degrees in Early Childhood. Three NC Pre-K children’s files were observed. I documented the following violations during today’s visit: 601 – There was no thermometer in the refrigerator in space 3. 528 – The menu listed that corn was served for lunch, but green beans were served and no change was documented on the menu. 812 – There was one outlet uncovered and within reach of children in space 1. Violation Number Comment Rule 528 Food substitution was not of comparable food value or recorded on the menu prior to the meal or snack being served. The menu listed that corn was served for lunch, but green beans were served and no change was documented on the menu. 10A NCAC 09 .0901(b) 601 Refrigerator(s) did not maintain a temperature of 45 degrees F. or below. There was no thermometer in the refrigerator in space 3. 15A NCAC 18A .2806(j)(2) 812 Electrical outlets and power strips, not in use, which were located in space used by children did not have safety outlets or were not covered with safety plugs unless located behind furniture or equipment that cannot be moved by a child. There was one outlet uncovered and within reach of children in space 1. 10A NCAC 09 .0604(c) Because the violations were corrected during the visit, no letter is necessary. Additional monitoring visits may be conducted during the year to monitor compliance with applicable childcare requirements. I provided the following Technical Assistance during today’s visit: I have told the teachers that the refrigerator thermometer must stay in the refrigerator. Consultation: I have reviewed this visit summary with Ms. Saunders at the conclusion of the visit and a copy was given to her.
