The visit was conducted with you, Annie Denaux, Owner/Lead Teacher. You provided me with applicable program records for review during the visit. The most recent annual compliance visit was conducted on February 6, 2026. This facility currently operates with a Five Star rated license effective August 2, 2019, meeting daytime care only, enhanced ratios and enhanced space. This facility has earned six points in program standards, seven points in staff education, and one quality point for the child care administrator having at least 10 years of documented early childhood work experience in a licensed program that can be verified by the Division. The license was posted, and the restrictions were in compliance. This facility currently uses Creative Curriculum for approved curriculum requirements. The program’s compliance history was 100 percent prior to today’s visit. The NC Secretary of State website was reviewed on June 10, 2026, and Kenlin Academy, Ltd. was listed as current/active. Limited monitoring was conducted. A walk-through of licensed indoor and outdoor space was completed. Staff and children were observed during a group screen time activity, free play activities indoors, art activities, gross motor activities outdoors, handwashing routines, and lunch. The most recent sanitation inspection for your facility was conducted April 23, 2026. A superior sanitation classification was issued with 2 demerits noted on the grade card. The analysis date for the most recent lead water test was March 29, 2024. Lead water testing must be completed every three years. This website indicated this facility was exempt from required asbestos and lead-based paint testing. The most recent fire inspection for your facility was conducted on March 4, 2026. The most recent monthly fire drill was conducted on June 2, 2026, at 3:25pm. The most recent quarterly lockdown/shelter-in-place drill recorded on the Emergency Drill Log was completed on March 2, 2026. A shelter-in-place drill was completed during today’s visit at 10:20am. The most recent monthly playground inspection was completed on May 28, 2026. You stated no new staff have been employed since your most recent annual compliance visit. The violation observed today was discussed with you and documented in the Visit Summary left with you at the conclusion of this visit. The following violation was observed: Violation Number Comment Rule 1811 Shelter-in-place or lockdown drills were not practiced every three months and/or drill record was incomplete. The most recent quarterly lockdown drill was completed on March 2, 2026. .0604(u);.0302(d)(8) The violation observed was corrected during the visit. Child care programs are expected to achieve and maintain compliance at all times and are required by NC GS 110-90(4)(d) to achieve and maintain an eighteen-month compliance history score of at least seventy-five percent. Any violation(s) documented may impact the compliance history score. Technical Assistance: Emergency Drills- A shelter-in-place drill was completed during the visit, on June 10, 2026, at 10:20am. Shelter-in-place or lockdown drills must be practiced within every three months. I suggested that you make a note on a calendar or set a reminder on your computer to conduct emergency drills at least every three months. Shelter-in-place or lockdown drills are to be conducted within three months of the previous drill rather than once every quarter. Consultation: -We discussed the mushrooms, bird nest, and spider webs on your playground. You stated you have not been on the playground this week due to rain. Before the children went outside, the mushrooms were removed. I suggested that you review sanitation requirements and discuss any sanitation concerns with your Environmental Health Specialist. QRIS Pathways to the Stars Rated License Assessment: -You stated this facility will follow Pathway #1, the Program Assessment Pathway, for your rated license assessment. During the visit, I printed the Application for Assessment for a Rated License for Centers, Family and Community Engagement Standards, Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) for the Facility and Individual, Self-Study documents from NCRLAP, Self Study Verification Form, Environment Rating Scale (ERS) Assessment Request, Staff Information and Education Worksheets, and Quality Initiatives Recognition form. We reviewed these forms and I encouraged you to reach out to me if you have any questions when completing the documents. -I encouraged you to review QRIS information more thoroughly by visiting https://ncchildcare.ncdhhs.gov/Provider/Licensing/Star-Rated-License/QRIS-Modernization. -You stated you intend to begin your three-month self-study soon. I reminded you that the three-month self-study must be completed before the Environment Rating Scale assessment can be requested. -Staff education must be updated in WORKS. You currently have three staff members, and all three staff members have WORKS accounts. The Lead Teacher may need to be re-evaluated for the Lead Teacher position. In order for staff to be re-evaluated for a position, they would need to complete one or more of the following: •Upload a document (typed or handwritten) to their DCDEE WORKS account stating they would like to be re-evaluated based on the updated degree in the field criteria. •Electronically apply for positions in their DCDEE WORKS account. If they have already applied for all applicable positions, it is not necessary for them to apply again. •Electronically upload education documentation in their DCDEE WORKS account. If they have already uploaded all required education documentation for the positions applied, it is not necessary for them to upload again. •Mail or electronically submit through the National Student Clearinghouse official transcripts documenting all the coursework they have completed at this time. If they have not completed any additional coursework since the last time they submitted official transcripts to the Unit, it is not necessary for them to send official transcripts again. -Reach out to the Partnership for Children of Lincoln and Gaston Counties for additional technical assistance and support at 704-922-0900. Reminders and Resources: -Providers can speak to a Behavior Support Advisor for advice and resources specific to the challenging behaviors in their classroom by calling 1-888-600-1685 Option 1. Providers may also submit questions to a Behavior Support Advisor online and receive a call or email in response. In addition, providers may post questions in the ‘Talk to the Expert’ Group on an online network, Social Emotional Connections, for early childhood educators. There are also opportunities to join free webinars on challenging topics or classroom activities. The following areas were monitored during the visit: supervision, staff/child ratio, CPR, first aid, special training including health and safety trainings, criminal background checks, Emergency Medical Care Plan, storage of hazardous products, general safety, discipline, adequate/approved space, program records, license posted, and permit restrictions. Upon arrival, the purpose of today’s visit was reviewed with you, Annie Denaux, Owner. You accompanied us on the walkthrough of the facility and provided applicable program records for review during the visit. Dinah Brown, Child Care Consultant, accompanied me. This program currently operates with a Five star rated license effective August 2, 2019. The program’s compliance history was 98 percent prior to today’s visit. Child care programs are expected to achieve and maintain compliance at all times and are required by NC GS 110-90(4) (d) to achieve and maintain an eighteen-month compliance history score of at least seventy-five percent. Any violation(s) documented may impact the compliance history score. The NC Secretary of State website was reviewed on September 7, 2023, and Kenlin Academy, Ltd. was listed as current/active. Limited monitoring was conducted. A walk-through of licensed indoor and outdoor space was completed during the visit. Staff and children were observed during nap time. The most recent sanitation inspection for your facility was conducted December 2, 2022. A superior sanitation classification was issued with 2 demerits noted on the grade card. The most recent fire inspection for your facility was conducted on March 24, 2023. You stated no new staff have been employed since your most recent annual compliance visit conducted on March 28, 2023. The following violation of child care requirements was observed during today’s visit. The violation and technical assistance were thoroughly reviewed with you and documented in the Visit Summary given to you at the conclusion of the visit. Emergency drills were not recorded on the Emergency Drill Log since March 6, 2023. The owner stated emergency drills were completed on June 6, 2023, and September 1, 2023, but they were not recorded on the Emergency Drill Log. .0604(u);.0302(d)(8) The violation observed was corrected during the visit. Technical Assistance regarding the violation observed: Emergency Drills- The owner recorded the shelter-in-place and lockdown drills conducted on June 6, 2023, and September 1, 2023, on the Emergency Drill Log during the visit. Shelter-in-place or lockdown drills must be practiced every three months and information regarding the drill must be recorded on the log. I recommended that you have another staff double check the Emergency Drill Log to ensure all drills are recorded once completed. Consultation (the following items reviewed were in compliance today): -We discussed that the indoor and outdoor premises must be checked once a day, prior to initial use, ensuring debris, and broken equipment is removed and disposed of. -Providers can speak to a Behavior Support Advisor for advice and resources specific to the challenging behaviors in their classroom by calling 1-888-600-1685 Option 1. -Moodle Support: The Division offers early childhood professionals a wide range of professional development opportunities through our online learning platform Moodle.
