This DPI NC Pre-K classroom currently operates with a Five-Star license, effective October 23, 2025. Upon arrival at the elementary school, I was greeted by the office staff. When I entered the classroom, I was greeted by Ms. K. Rivas and Ms. C. Goins. Both of you assisted me with the information required for the visit. I walked through the indoor areas of the program that the children use during the visit. Fifteen children were present today. I observed the children during transition activities, eating lunch, and activities. The teachers interacted with the children in a pleasant manner. The most recent sanitation inspection was conducted on February 18, 2026, and received a classification of Superior with ten demerits. A fire inspection was completed on September 3, 2025. I received a copy of the inspection report during the visit completed December 11, 2025. The public-school off-site records verification forms for staff records and children’s records were completed and were signed by the principal. A partial assessment of applicable child care requirements was conducted during today’s visit. One violation was observed and corrected during today’s visit. Violation Number Comment Rule 807 A safe indoor and outdoor environment was not provided for the children. A personal handbag was located on a low shelf. 10A NCAC 09 .0601(a) We discussed the following items of technical assistance today: Intentional planning of the environment is essential to ensure a safe environment that prevents and reduces injuries to young children. During the visit, items requiring locked storage were observed to be improperly stored on a low shelf. It is extremely important that staff take the necessary time to properly store hazards items either in a locked storage or at least five feet above the finished floor to ensure children do not have access to them. Additionally, a personal handbag belonging to a staff member was observed on a shelf lower than five feet from the finished floor. The handbag was moved from the shelf and placed in a space five feet from the finished floor. We appreciate all you are doing to serve the children and families of NC. If you have any questions or if I may be of further assistance, please contact me at 743-241-0126 or by email at Elizabeth.Childress@dhhs.nc.gov. Thank you for your time and cooperation during the visit today.
