The previous Annual Compliance Visit was completed March 21, 2024, and prior to today’s visit, the eighteen-month compliance history score was at 100%, which is at or above 75%, as required by North Carolina General Statute 110-90(4)(c-d). This program currently operates with a five-star license, issued December 23, 2019, earning seven (7) points in education standards, seven (7) points in program standards, and one quality (1) point by having reduced staff/child ratios by one in each group from the seven point level as required in .2818(c). The information on record with DCDEE was verified as correct by Taneka Garrett. Current Inspections are as follows: Sanitation Classification of superior completed March 20, 2024. Fire Classification of approved completed September 14, 2023. Taneka Garrett, teacher, was present and assisted me while I observed the indoor and outdoor areas. Upon my arrival, there were fifteen (15) children in care. Children were participating in various activities; Art, using paper plates, crayons, glue sticks, and pre-cut shapes; playdough with various cookie cutters; Name tracing in the writing area. A teacher asked questions like, “What letter is that?” and “How to spell your name?” In dramatic play, children used pretend food and cookware. They washed dishes and cooked on the stove. Next, children prepared for outdoors by toileting and washing their hands. Children chanted nursery rhymes while waiting in line. Outdoors, children were observed running, climbing, sliding, riding bikes, digging in the sand using buckets and shovels. A teacher participated in a re-lay race with children. Upon returning indoors, children washed their hands and got a drink of water from individual water bottles. Positive communication was observed between teachers and children. For example, a child was asked, “Why we don’t throw sand?” The teacher told the child to look in her eyes and she asked the question again. The teacher repeated the child’s answer and the child returned to play. Children were asked if they were making good choices. They were also reminded that they could make another choice. Lunch consisted of hamburgers, chicken alfredo, bread sticks, seasoned peas, sweet potato fries, fresh apple, and milk. At the completion of the visit, the Visit Summary was reviewed with T. Garrett. The following violation was observed: Violation Number Comment Rule 124 The center did not maintain records as required in rule, and/or were not made available to the Division for review. A current fire inspection was not on file and available for review. The last fire inspection on file was dated September 14, 2023. G.S. 110-91(9); .0304(g); .2318 1049 All staff did not successfully complete certification in CPR training appropriate to the age of the children in care. Verification of staff completion of the CPR course from an approved training organization was not in the staff file. One staff member's (F.T.) CPR training certification expired on April 30, 2024. .1102(d) The violation observed and documented today must be corrected immediately. You must submit a written, dated, and signed statement to me by 5:00 pm on October 2, 2024. The statement must describe accurately and in detail, how and when the violations were corrected. If the letter states that corrections have been made when they have not, this may be considered falsification of information. Observation Suggestions: When speaking with children, continue to repeat what they say to you. This shows them that you are listening. Prompt their thought process by asking them to explain their thinking. Provide information by expanding, giving clarification, and giving specific feedback on the subject matter. Continue giving encouragement and affirmation (ex. great job, I know you can do it, and talking about what you see them do in an exciting tone).
