Refer to child care rule 10A NCAC 09 .0605(i)(1-2). Observation Suggestions: • Capture the degree to which the teacher’s interactions with children and classroom activities place an emphasis on children’s interest, motivations & points of view and encourage their responsibility & independence. • Offer a range of opportunities for children to express their ideas in the context of both planned and unplanned activities. • Provide a balance of adult and child-directed activities where children can make guided decisions based on teacher’s clearly identified expectations (example, where to sit at circle time). • Plan routines and experiences that allow children to be successful with little support. • Allow children a few minutes on their cots before the lights are turned out. This allows children to transition from being very active to being very still. Your center might provide nap books or simple manipulative toys for children to explore independently for 5 minutes. In continuing with this enhancement to rest time, the teacher could put on a short audio story or soft music for children to listen to once the lights are dim. This allows the teacher to gather naptime books and tuck each child in to give them a nurturing send-off to rest time. Remember, some children rest better if they have something from home to cuddle.
