The previous Annual Compliance Visit was completed April 1, 2025, and prior to today’s visit, the eighteen-month compliance history score was 96%. Your program currently operates with a four-star license issued November 17, 2022. The License was based on the program earning seven points in education standards, two points in program standards, and one quality point by providing staff benefits package and Infrastructure of parent involvement. The information on record with DCDEE was verified as correct by Vickie Jones and the owner’s corporation, Next Step Developmental Learning Child Care Center, Inc. status was verified on the Secretary of State’s website as current-active. Current Inspections are as follows: Sanitation Classification of Superior completed August 4, 2025. Fire Classification of Approved completed May 23, 2025. Upon my arrival, I was greeted by LaShaye Saunders, Lead Teacher. Vickie Jones, Administrator, arrived during the visit. They assisted me as I monitored the indoor and outdoor areas. There were sixteen children in care. Children in space #1, were sitting on the carpet, listening to information regarding end-of-year activities. They rehearsed a dance that will be performed. Next, they listened to a story and prepared for outdoors. Children in space #2, were observed participating in show and tell. They took turns standing in front of the class and talking about their creative drawings. The teacher asked questions like, “Do fruits make your body healthy and strong?” Children were praised and given affirmation when done. I observed toileting, handwashing, sanitation, outdoor play, and lunch. Outdoors, children ran, played hide and go seek, and used a ball. Lunch consisted of chicken nuggets, mac/cheese, apple sauce, and milk. Children and staff files were monitored during the visit. NCPre-K Administrator: Vickie Jones NC Pre-K (space #1) Lead Teacher – LaShaye Saunders Teacher – Mesiah Malin NC Pre-K (space #2) Lead Teacher – Manijah Drayton Transportation was monitored during the visit. Vehicle: Ford Transit Van (Rental) License Plate: 2****4 Registration/Inspection expiration date: 6/30/26 Insurance: 2/9/26 – 3/31/26 (Rental) At the completion of the visit, the Visit Summary was reviewed with V. Jones. The following violations were observed: Violation Number Comment Rule 1048 All staff did not successfully complete certification in First Aid appropriate to the age of children in care. Verification of staff completion of First Aid training from an approved training organization was not in the staff file. One staff member's (M.D.) first aid certification was not current and expired on 8/4/25. .1102(c) 1049 All staff did not successfully complete certification in CPR training appropriate to the age of the children in care. Verification of staff completion of the CPR course from an approved training organization was not in the staff file. One staff member's (M.D.) CPR certification was not current and expired on 8/4/25. .1102(d) 1115 First aid kit and/or fire extinguisher was not located in vehicle; kit and/or extinguisher was not mounted or secured if in passenger area. A first aid kit was not located in the rental van that transports children. 10A NCAC 09 .1003(c) The violation must be corrected immediately. Mail or email a written, dated, and signed statement to me by 5:00 PM on April 1, 2026. describing how and when the violation was corrected and how the facility plans to maintain compliance in the future. If the compliance letter is not received by the due date, an additional visit will be conducted to verify that violations have been corrected. You plan to submit an application to me by June 30, 2026. A violation was cited for not having a first aid kit in a vehicle that transports children. You stated that the vehicle is a rental van, and you forgot to transfer the first aid kit. The violations for CPR and First Aid certification trainings were cited today. Obtaining the required certifications/training courses is important because it helps staff develop the skills and knowledge necessary to keep children in care safe and healthy. CPR and First Aid training certifications expired for one staff member. Refer to child care rule 10A NCAC 09 .1102(d) regarding staff requirements. Children used materials like unifix cubes, cars, purple sand, and books. Children in space #2, were observed outdoors. They were walking around the playground looking for insects. They found three caterpillars. They saw an ant hill but did not see any ants. They waited for ants to come out. No ants. Once indoors children participated in a group activity and prepared for lunch. Lunch consisted of taco meat, flour tortillas, corn, mixed fruit, and milk. I observed toileting, hand washing, sanitation, and rest time. Children and staff files were monitored during the visit.
