Today’s visit was facilitated with the owner/director. The purpose of today’s visit was to monitor child care requirements during a Routine Unannounced visit. The last Annual Compliance visit was conducted on 10/3/23. This center operates with a four-star license, which was issued on 5/18/22. The compliance history for this center for the previous eighteen-month timeframe was 98%. OBSERVATIONS: All indoor licensed space and the outdoor environment were monitored today. I observed that the interior of the center had been painted. I observed the children going outside to play and engaged in a variety of free play activities. I observed the toddlers engaged in a teacher directed activity. I observed the children eating lunch, which consisted of chicken patty, bread, peas w/carrotts, mandarin oranges, and milk. CHILDREN’S RECORDS: Children’s records were not reviewed today. STAFF RECORDS: There were no new staff at this center. By reviewing the staff/training worksheet from the 10/3/23 visit, I verified that staff had current Criminal Record Check clearance. During today’s visit I verified that all staff had current CPR and First Aid training. I also verified that the administrator and teachers in infant classroom had current IT’S SIDS training. TRANSPORTATION: The Ford van with license #HHR-2483 was monitored today, because the vehicle was not present on the premises during the 10/3/23 Annual Compliance visit. INSPECTIONS: The last documented annual fire inspection was conducted on 1/4/24. The last documented sanitation inspection was conducted on 10/30/23. The last documented fire drill was conducted on 3/4/23. The last documented fire drill, shelter-in-place drill and outdoor inspection was conducted on 3/4/23. Certification of water testing for lead was conducted on 8/11/23 and posted. Violation Number Comment Rule 807 A safe indoor and outdoor environment was not provided for the children. Two pickets on porch area of storage building in fenced-in space were unattached, leaving exposed nails accessible to the children. 10A NCAC 09 .0601(a) The following violation was cited today: Please send me a signed Corrective Action letter by 4/2/24, stating how the violation cited today has been corrected. TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE WAS PROVIDED TODAY ON THE FOLLOWING TOPICS: SPACE CAPACITY IN CLASSROOM SPACE #1: During today's visit the owner/director explained how classroom space #1 accommodated an enrollment of 19 children with a space capacity for 11 children. The school age children do not arrive for care until after the preschool age children have left for the day. The owner/director conducts transportation daily for pre-school age children and school age children. The owner/director stated that the center did not offer care for school age children on Teacher Work Days. TRANSPORTATION VAN: I stated that the owner/director needed to clean out the van, removing all papers and items under the seats for the added safety of the children. RATED LICENSE: I stated that Kids Korner Academy was in Cohort III for the Rated License reassessment. Your preparation year wi7/1/25ll begin on 7/1/25. Your assessment year will begin on 7/1/26. AGENCY UPDATES: In addition, child care facilities are now required to test for lead and asbestos hazards in their buildings. The Clean Classrooms for Carolina Kids program is designed to identify and eliminate exposure to lead and asbestos hazards in building infrastructure, while providing child care facilities with the support needed to meet all rule requirements. The program is free, and the first step is to watch one of the pre-enrollment webinars, which are available at www.cleanwaterforUSkids.org/carolina. The purpose of today’s unannounced visit was to monitor applicable child care requirements for your Annual Compliance visit. This center operates with a four-star license, which was issued on 1012/22. The compliance history for this center for the previous eighteen-month timeframe was 99%. During today’s visit I all indoor and outdoor licensed space was monitored. I observed the children enjoying the outdoor environment and eating lunch, which consisted of chicken, baked beans, bread, pears, and milk. During today’s visit all staff files were reviewed and yearly in-service training requirements were tallied. Nine children’s files were randomly selected and reviewed. TRANSPORTATION: The owner/director stated that currently the center was not conducting any transportation services. The vehicle previously used for transportation was not on the premises today. INSPECTIONS: The last documented annual fire inspection was conducted on 1/18/23. The last documented sanitation inspection was conducted on 3/31/23. The last documented fire drill was conducted on 10/2/23. The last documented shelter-in-place drill was conducted on 8/1/23. The last playground inspection was conducted on 10/2/23. The following violation was cited today: Violation Number Comment Rule 807 A safe indoor and outdoor environment was not provided for the children. Branches, limbs, and sticks needed to be removed from the outdoor fenced-in space. 10A NCAC 09 .0601(a) All violations must be corrected immediately. Please send me a signed Corrective Action letter by 10/17/23, stating how the violation cited today has been corrected. TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE WAS PROVIDED TODAY ON THE FOLLOWING TOPICS: STAFFING: During today’s visit the owner/director stated that since completing Early Childhood coursework at Durham Technical Community College, the floater was assuming the position of assistant director. OUTDOOR ENVIRONMENT: Technical Assistance was provided on the need to set all mobile equipment on the fenced-in space upright on the ground to entice play on the equipment. TRANSPORTATION: During today’s visit I observed that before resuming transportation, the vehicle needed to be inspected. Also, please review the transportation requirements in NC Child Care Rules 10NCAC 09 .1000 before beginning transportation services again.
