The center operates with a 5-star license. The center had a compliance history of 97% prior to this visit. This facility is designated as NC Pre-K and operates two (2) classrooms within a public school. The center is requesting to have an environment rating scale assessment conducted when the 2026-2027 school year begins. The last rated license assessment was in January 2020. The last annual compliance visit was conducted in November 2025. There were 28 children present today. The children were observed transitioning to lunch, completing bathroom/handwashing routines, participating in a large group interactive shared reading activity, engaging in teacher-directed gross motor activities, and participating in outdoor free play. A superior sanitation inspection was completed on 6/2/25 with 0 demerits. The last fire inspection was completed on 11/10/25. A monthly fire drill was last conducted on 4/16/26 and a lockdown drill was last conducted on 5/5/26. All fire drills/emergency drills have been completed and documented as required. There has been one (1) new staff member hired since the last monitoring. During the visit the childcare consultant added the new staff member’s information to a staff and training worksheet. The staff and training worksheets completed for the November 2025 visit along with staff files were used today to monitor for valid CPR/FA certifications, specialized training and criminal record qualification letters. All criminal record qualification letters are current for all staff. There are no changes to the dates for specialized training. The following were monitored during this visit: supervision, staff/child ratios, storage of hazardous products and medications, adequate/approved space, program records, posted license and license restrictions. A walk through the indoor and outdoor areas used by the children was conducted and the following items were posted for easy reference: license, Summary of NC Child Care Law, daily schedules, emergency medical care plan, safe arrival and departure procedures, emergency telephone numbers, evacuation routes, applicable staff/child ratio charts, CPR and First Aid posters, menus and current activity plans. The monthly outdoor playground inspection reports have been completed as required and were monitored today. Rated license: The application for assessment for a rated license, the family and community engagement form, facility continuous quality improvement plan, and individual CQI plans were monitored. Staff education information was reviewed via WORKS. These documents were reviewed with J. Johnson, Lead Teacher. There was one (1) violation of childcare requirements observed today. This violation was corrected during the visit. Violation Number Comment Rule 840 All corrosive agents, pesticides, bleaches, detergents, cleansers, polishes, any product which is under pressure in an aerosol dispenser, and any substance which may be hazardous to a child if ingested, inhaled, or handled were not stored in a locked room or cabinet. During the visit hand sanitizer on a key ring and hand sanitizer in an open side pocket of a lunch bag were observed on a teacher's desk in space #208. .2820(b) You are required to maintain compliance with all applicable childcare rules and regulations at all times. NC GS 110-90(4)(d) requires all childcare facilities to maintain a compliance history score of at least 75% for the past 18 months or during the length of time the facility has operated, whichever is less. Failure to do so may result in the issuance of a provisional license or other administrative action. Violations cited during the visit may negatively affect this score. Failure to maintain compliance with our requirements may result in administrative action against your license, which could include civil penalties. Repeated violations may significantly affect your compliance history. Technical Assistance: *In preparation for the transition to the classroom and instructional quality pathway, all staff need to have a WORKS account and submit education documents for an education evaluation to be conducted by the WORKS unit. Any staff who have completed additional education since their education was last evaluated will want to submit education documents for their education evaluation to be updated. The WORKS unit must receive official transcripts, unofficial transcripts will be rejected. Upon arrival, I was greeted by the office staff and Emily Dunn, Principal. This facility operates two (2) NC Pre-K classrooms located inside a public school. I conducted a walk-through of both classrooms. Due to inclement weather the outdoor learning environment was not monitored. The “Annual Compliance Monitoring Checklist for Child Care Centers” was used to note the requirements monitored today. The facility operates with a 5-star license issued 3/4/2020 and had a 96% compliance history prior to today’s visit. There are currently 35 children enrolled and 30 children were present during the visit. The children were observed during indoor free play, and bathroom/handwashing routines. Prior to the visit I received the updated staff and training worksheets via email. There have been no new staff hired since the last annual compliance visit that was conducted on 12/1/23. During today’s visit I monitored the file of one (1) existing staff, and four (4) children's records. A superior sanitation inspection was conducted on 6/19/24 with 0 demerits. The last fire inspection was conducted on 11/15/24. The facility was found to be Satisfactory and approved for day time care only. The last documented fire drill was conducted on 11/21/24. The last shelter-in-place drill was conducted on 10/25/24. All emergency drills have been documented as required. The monthly playground inspections have been completed as required. The facility provides transportation using the public-school bus. The following items were posted for easy reference: license, NC Summary of Child Care Law, safe arrival and departure procedures, emergency medical care plan, emergency telephone numbers, daily schedules, activity plans, menu, applicable staff/child ratio charts, tobacco free signage, First Aid poster and evacuation routes. I monitored the following items during the visit: supervision, staff/child ratio, staff, health, safety, program records, management and medication. Medications were monitored during today’s visit. NC Pre-K: This NC Pre-K site serves 35 children. The current NC Pre-K staff were the same staff indicated in the NC Pre-K Plan System. The facility uses the Creative Curriculum. On-going developmental assessments are created throughout the school year using Teaching Strategies Gold, checkpoints and self-made teacher assessments. The Teaching Strategies Gold is completed three times per year assessing the children in social, physical, cognitive language development, literacy, math, arts, social studies and science. One checkpoint has been completed thus far this school year. The information gathered from the assessments are used to prepare information that is shared with parents during parent/teacher conferences that are held two times per year. One parent/teacher conference has been held thus far for the school year. A developmental and learning report is prepared and shared with the parent. The classrooms operate from 7:30am until 2:30pm to meet the required 32.5 hours per week requirement. Newsletters are sent home monthly. Family engagement activities occur monthly. A family engagement event occurred in November. Parents are encouraged to engage in their child's education and asked to complete monthly take home activities with their child. The following activity centers are present in the classrooms: books/literacy, dramatic play, blocks, art, math, writing, science, music, and manipulatives. The following violations of child care requirements was observed during the visit. The letter should include the facility name and facility ID number. List each item using the item number located to the left of the violation description. When submitting an email for corrections, that email must be sent from the email address of the person designated to submit corrections (example: director) and must include this person’s name and title at the end of the email. I must receive the letter by email or at the address below on or before 12/10/24. You are required to maintain compliance with all applicable childcare rules and regulations at all times. The facility is also licensed to serve Developmental Day children. I conducted a walk-through of both classrooms. Prior to the visit I sent an email requesting the staff and training worksheets. The worksheets were received during today’s visit. During the visit I monitored the files of two new (2) staff, and the file of one (1) existing staff member. I monitored four (4) children's records. A superior sanitation inspection was conducted on 6/8/23 with 0 demerits. The last fire inspection was conducted on 11/21/23. The last documented fire drill was conducted on 11/30/23. The last lockdown drill was conducted on 11/28/23. All emergency drills are conducted and documented as required. The monthly playground inspections have been completed as required.
