E. Smith, Administrator, and R. Williams, Office Manager were present and assisted with the visit. Currently, this center operates with a Four-Star license issued on April 29, 2019, earning seven (7) points in the Education Component, two (2) points in the Program Component, and one (1) Quality point. The last sanitation inspection was completed June 11, 2025, earning a Superior rating and “0” demerits. The last fire inspection was completed May 19, 2025, and the facility was approved for day time and night care. The last annual compliance visit was conducted on July 23, 2024. Fifty-two (52) children were present between the ages of zero (0) and twelve (12) years of age. Children were observed completing in free choice activities, teacher directed activities, handwashing and toileting routines, and preparing for lunch. All interactions between the teachers and children were positive and nurturing in nature. I used the Annual Compliance Monitoring Checklist for Child Care Centers and the Child Care Center Item Number Listing as a basic monitoring tool to assess compliance with all applicable child care requirements pertinent to this facility. Ten percent of staff records, ten percent of children’s records, and all program records were monitored. All children’s records and program records were all in compliance. One (1) violation was documented for staff record keeping/training. Any violations observed were discussed with you and documented on the computer-generated visit summary left with you at the conclusion of the visit. The following violations were documented today. The medical statement should be on file prior to the employee’s first day of employment. OUTDOOR PLAY AREA The mulch on the outdoor play area used by the school aged children needs to be replenished. There is an insufficient amount of mulch covering the playground and did not meet the depth requirements in the rule. There is also weeds growing through the mulch. However, after lengthy careful consideration DCDEE has reluctantly decided it will not bring back the Early Childhood Equivalency Exam due to concerns about academic integrity. We make this decision to ensure fair and equitable opportunity for all aspiring early childhood teachers, uphold minimum educational standards, and keep staff and children in licensed child care environments safe. Note, other Pathways to the Profession of Early Childhood Teacher still include: • EDU 119 – Introduction to Early Childhood Education: This 12-week course introduces the foundations of culturally responsive, equitable and inclusive early childhood education. Available at many N.C. Community Colleges with online, evening, or in-person options. I suggest you reach out to the local partnership to schedule a date for the training to be completed. The criminal record check for S. Lee will expire 2/12/2025. LEAD IN WATER/PAINT AND ASBESTOS Public schools and licensed child care facilities in North Carolina are eligible to participate in the funding mechanisms to cover the costs of testing for lead in water and inspecting for asbestos and lead-based paint hazards beyond the May 1, 2024 deadline listed in 10A NCAC 41C .1002(a). Due to the recent impacts of Hurricane Helene and other natural disasters, this deadline has been revised statewide, and facilities that have not yet enrolled should complete the online process by May 31, 2025. The Clean Classrooms for Carolina Kids Program is providing free facility-wide testing and inspections without any out-of-pocket costs. Due to the volume of testing and inspections, completion of the online enrollment process in the program is considered temporary compliance with the testing and inspection requirement and will allow facilities to participate in the funding mechanisms. Currently, this center operates with a Four-Star license issued on April 29, 2019, earning seven (7) points in the Education Component, two (2) points in the Program Component, and one (1) Quality point. The last sanitation inspection was completed June 11, 2024, earning a Superior rating and “0” demerits. The last fire inspection was completed May 23, 2024, and the facility was approved for day time and night care. The last annual compliance visit was conducted on July 23, 2024. Thirty-one (31) children were present between the ages of zero (0) and five (5) years of age. Children were observed completing in free choice activities, teacher directed activities, and handwashing and toileting routines. All interactions between the teachers and children were positive and nurturing in nature. The following requirements were monitored during today's visit: Staff/Child Ratio, Supervision, Specialized trainings, Storage of Hazardous Products, Storage of Medication, Adequate/Approved Space, General Safety, Staff Records, Program Records, and License Posted and Permit Restrictions. I used a checklist as a basic monitoring tool to assess compliance with all applicable childcare requirements pertinent to your program.
