Michelle Brefka did not ensure that dangerous and hazardous materials were out of the reach of children. On 4/16/2025, Child A was able to open a cabinet containing 2 LANDMARK BUILDING • 105 W. ALLEGAN STREET • LANSING, MICHIGAN 48933 Michigan.gov/MiLEAP dishwasher pods. The child safety latch that was installed on the inside of the cabinet failed to prevent Child A from accessing the hazardous chemical. Child A ingested some of the chemical from a dishwasher pod and vomited.

Michelle Brefka did not provide appropriate care and supervision of children at all times. On 4/16/2025, Child A’s whereabouts and activities were unknown to Michelle Brefka while she and the other children were working on an art project in the dining area adjacent to the kitchen. Child A gained access to dishwasher pods under the kitchen sink without Michelle Brefka noticing. Child A ingested some of the detergent and vomited.

Electronic records may be used. If electronic records are used, they must be available to the department at the time of the inspection. If electronic attendance records are not available during an on-site inspection, the child care home is in violation of this rule.

Michelle Brefka did not maintain accurate child attendance records. Neither Child A nor Child B were signed in on attendance records on 4/16/2025, nor were they signed in on 4/15/2025 or 4/17/2025. The dates on the attendance records for the week were off by one day and were not accurate.
