R400.8137 · R400.8137 Diapering, toileting. (1) Except as provided in subrule (2) of this rule, diapering must occur in a designated diapering area that complies with all of the following: b) Is within close proximity to a sink that is used exclusively for hand washing.
On 10/21/2020 the Complainant reported that Child A's (23- month-old, female) sippy cup had come home with a lid that belonged to another child. The Complainant was concerned that Child A had been using the sippy cup with the other child's lid. She stated that Child A's sippy cup goes back and forth between home and the center on a daily basis and she uses the sippy cup to drink either milk or water. Child A's first and last name are on the bottom of the cup, but not on the lid. When the Complainant's spouse had mentioned his concern about the mix up of the sippy cup's lid to a child care staff member (CCSM), the CCSM just said, "oops" and stated they did not know exactly how the mix up had happened. The Complainant stated, "Multiple times we have received someone else's cup." On 10/23/2020 when I arrived on-site, licensee designee Ms. Christine Huntey was not present. Ms. Alexis Cummings, Ms. Huntey's daughter, was on-site and acting on Ms. Huntey's behalf as licensee designee. I explained the allegations to both Ms. Cummings and program director Ms. Erika Taylor. Ms. Taylor reported that she believed the wrong cup had gotten sent home with a child on one occasion, "It had just gotten cleaned in the dishwasher. There were two children with similar cups and I think lids kept getting mixed up." Ms. Taylor stated that the sippy cups in the toddler room are rinsed out between uses, placed in the dishwasher after lunch and at the end of the day. Not all the children bring in their own sippy cups to be used during the day. The center provides sippy cups for children who do not bring in one of their own. Child care staff member Ms. Carol Kornell reported that there are two children who sometimes arrive at the center with milk in their sippy cups. She stated, "Sometimes it has their first name on it or I write it on." Since there are no children who have the same first name, the last names are not written on the sippy cups. The sippy cups are dated if they arrive with milk in them. After breakfast, the sippy cups are taken to the kitchen and "we just rinse them out with water. If it's milk, than soap and water and rinse the [lid] pieces out." The sippy cups are used for morning snack and then taken down to the kitchen to be rinsed out or placed in the dishwasher. The sippy cups are used again for lunch and then taken to the kitchen to be rinsed out or placed in the dishwasher. "Ms. Lynn Taylor [child care staff member] runs them through the dishwasher usually." The sippy cups are used again for afternoon snack. After afternoon snack, the sippy cups that typically go home with a child are placed in their personal bags and the remaining sippy cups are taken down to the kitchen to be placed in the dishwasher. Child care staff member Ms. Alyssa Schuberg reported that when children bring a sippy cup with them in the morning from home, it is usually labeled with only the child's first name. If a child brings a sippy cup with them in the morning, then the sippy cup is used for breakfast. After breakfast, the sippy cups go to the kitchen. The sippy cups come back to the room with water in them to be used for morning 3 snack. After morning snack, the water in the sippy cups is dumped out in the sink located in the toddler room, then rinsed out and filled with milk. The sippy cups, filled with milk, are then used for lunch. After lunch, the sippy cups are taken down to the kitchen. The sippy cups are returned to the toddler room filled with water for the afternoon snack. The sippy cups that go home with the children are placed in their bags and the remaining sippy cups are sent down to the kitchen. Ms. Schuberg was unsure of what happens to the sippy cups once they are sent down to the kitchen. She has never noticed the wrong lid being placed on a cup while a child was using their cups and she has never noticed the lids and bottoms of the sippy cups having been mixed up. Child care staff member Ms. Brieanna Lintemuth reported that there are ap
