Child A (female, 4 years old) came home with an excessive amount of pickers stuck in her skin, some too deep to use tweezers to get out. She had them on her bottom, back, legs and arms. Another child shoved Child A into the picker weeds and did not report it to Child A's parent. The child care staff member (CCSM) told Child A she was lying, that nothing happened to her. 2

On April 27, 2023 I conducted an unannounced onsite inspection. I interviewed all three classroom child care staff members separately about the incident. CCSM 1 stated she and CCSM 2 were in the area of the playground where they could see Child A playing in the corner where the alleged picker weeds grow. Child A was playing a game with other children and she dropped onto the ground and rolled around on the ground. CCSM 1 brushed off the pickers from the weeds from the outside of Child A's clothing. CCSM 1 stated the child did not say anything about having them on the inside of her clothes. CCSM 2 stated she observed Child A playing around on the ground in the same area CCSM 1 observed her. CCSM 3 stated she was on the other side of the playground and did not observe Child A playing in that area. During the onsite inspection I walked the playground to look at the weeds with the pickers. I found very few weeds that have the pickers on them. They were not in one specific area of the playground but scattered around. The weeds will be mowed down when the maintenance mows the play area. The play area is mowed approximately once a week during the summer.

The licensee designee did ensure the premises was maintained in a clean and safe condition. I walked the playground in the area where Child A had rolled around on the ground. I saw some weeds that had some pickers on them. The weeds were spread out around, they were not thick in any areas of the playground.
