Child A (2 1/2 year old male) and other children in the classroom have been bitten by the same child and nothing is being done to address this to keep the children safe. fV i!AI*11Lelmleh On 04/20/2022, I interviewed Program Director Ms. Hippe and Assistant Director Ms. Simmons at the center. Ms. Hippe and Ms. Simmons said Child A and none of the other children in the discovery preschool classroom have been bitten by the same child. Every biting incident is taken seriously and is immediately addressed. There is not a pattern of biting in that classroom, but there have been incidents of biting as biting is a typical behavior of 2 to 3 year old children. Since the COVID-19 1/2 pandemic, the center has seen an increase in children's behavioral issues in the classroom such as screaming, climbing on furniture, hitting, kicking, hair pulling, and scratching. Regarding biting incidents, Child A was bitten by Child G in January 2022 and most recently, Child A was bitten twice by Child C on 04/15/2022 and 04/18/2022. Ms. Simmons spoke to Child A's father regarding the April 2022 biting incidents. She informed Child A's father that he had been bitten by a non-verbal child on both occasions and on both occasions, the lead caregiver separated the children. During the conversation, Ms. Simmons felt that Child A's father believed that the non-verbal child has bitten other children and not just Child A. She initially told Child A's father that the non-verbal child had bitten other children but later in the conversation she said she made a mistake and told Child A's father that the non- verbal child had not bitten other children, and this was his first time biting. Ms. Hippe and Elizabeth Hood, KinderCare district leader, have had multiple conversations with Child A's parents about the incidents, how they were addressed, and how they will continue to address biting in the classroom. Since this is Child C's first biting incidents, Ms. Hippe does not want to move him to another classroom until they determine if biting is a significant issue with him. Child C usually does not get near other children and typically plays by himself. He has 3 been referred to Early On and currently has speech therapy. The center continues to consult with Child C's parents regarding his speech therapy and will develop a plan with the parents if biting continues to be an issue. Ms. Hippe has a staff meeting scheduled for 04/20/2022 in which she will provide child care staff members with resources on how to address biting. She is aware that during potty training ages child care staff members may need extra support in the classroom, therefore, she will be placing two child care staff members in the classroom when it is possible. I interviewed Ms. Svanda at the center on 04/20/2022 and on 04/26/2022. Ms. Svanda said she is the lead caregiver in the discovery preschool classroom. She denied that there is a pattern of biting incidents in the classroom, however, there have been biting incidents. The most recent biting incidents occurred on 04/15/2022 and on 04/18/2022. Child C bit Child A on both occasions. On 04/15/2022 during free time play, she heard Child A cry and she went over to see what happened. She believes Child C bit Child A's finger because he was holding his finger. Ms. Svanda was unsure of what occurred between Child A and Child C because she was tending to another child in another area in the classroom when the incident occurred. She immediately separated the children and consoled Child A. There were no marks on his finger. On 04/18/2022, Child A was playing with Child C and other children, whom she could not recall their names. When she turned around, Child A's arm was in Child C's mouth. The bite left a mark but did not break the skin. She separated the children and gave Child A hugs. In January 2022, Ms. Svanda could not recall what the children were doing but she remembers Child A and Child G were playing with each other. Child G bit Child A on his arm

R 400.8125 · .............................. ............................. .......................................... 1 R 400.8125 Staff; volunteer; requirements. (1) All staff and volunteers shall provide appropriate care and supervision of children at all times.
The child care staff members provided appropriate care and supervision of the children as it relates to addressing biting incidents. When there was a biting incident, the center separated the children and provided an age-appropriate explanation to the children why they must not bite other children. They provided first aid to the child if it was necessary and consoled the child who was bitten. The children's parents were notified of the biting incident. The child care staff members read books about biting to the children to reinforce that biting is unacceptable. They try to keep the children busy with activities to try to prevent biting incidents. Also, child care staff members continue to receive training on how to prevent biting incidents and how to address biting incidents in the classroom. Whenever it is possible, the center has had two child care staff members in the classroom when there are eight children to assist the lead caregiver.
