Violation
At the time of the visit, a student within the toddler/preschool classroom was observed to be within a crib, while all other students were completing a circle time. When asked why the student was in the crib it was reported by an educator within the room that the student had been displaying behaviors that were harmful to the other students in the room. With guidance, the educator removed the student from the crib. The educator then changed the students diaper. After the diaper change, the student was immediately placed in a short highchair with a tray on the front and brought to the group that was completing circle time. At the time of this observation, all other students were sitting on carpet squares and were not within a highchair. When asked why the one student was placed in the high chair it was again reported that the educators were trying to protect the other students from harmful behaviors that had been previously displayed and it was a busy time (diapers needed to be change and it was a transition to lunch time). The student was observed to remain in the highchair for roughly six minutes at circle time and then was moved to the lunch table (still within the same highchair). The student was observed to be at the lunch table for another three minutes before being provided their food. The student was not upset at any point throughout the entire observation. Confining a child to a swing, high chair, crib, playpen or any other piece of equipment for an extended period of time in lieu of supervision is prohibited child guidance practices. Time out may not exceed one minute for each year of the child's age.
