As a result, he received a gash above his eyebrow and a bruise on his cheek. The staff person was alone with nine children in the gym when the incident occurred, and could not leave the gym to take the child to the restroom. Therefore, she called the staff person in charge, and found she was not in the building, but running an errand. The staff person stated that she was unaware that the staff person in charge was not in the building when she called. The staff person stated that she had to hold her bare hand over the wound because blood was streaming down the child's face, and there were no gloves or Band-Aids available in the first aid kit. While the staff person waited for the staff person in charge to return, the staff person in charge called a staff person working in a toddler classroom for assistance. This staff person entered the gym, escorted the child downstairs, applied gauze, and notified the child's mother. The child’s mother transported him to the hospital where he received two stitches. In short, there was a lack of communication between the staff person in charge, and the staff person caring for children in the gym. The staff person in charge had to call another staff person for assistance. In the meantime, the staff person had to use her bare hand to cover the wound because there were no gloves available.
