591-1-1-.18(6) · Rule 591-1-1-.18(6) requires that non-disposable dishes, glasses and silverware shall be properly cleaned by pre-rinsing, or scraping, washing, sanitizing and air drying. A three (3) compartment sink or a dishwasher with a sani-cycle or capability of maintaining a rinse water temperature of a minimum of one hundred fifty (150) degrees Fahrenheit and a two (2) compartment sink shall be available. Dishes, glasses and silverware shall be rinsed in the approved dishwasher or rinsed in a chemical sanitizer and air dried.

During an investigation, it was determined that on June 6, 2023, a staff member did not properly clean, rinse and air dry a two-year-old child's sippy cup. The teacher rinsed a two-year-old child’s sippy cup and observed dried milk inside the cup. The teacher sprayed the cup with a bleach and water solution and rinsed the cup again. The teacher then put soap and water inside the cup and placed the cup on the counter to soak before leaving for the day. The child transitioned to another classroom with other teachers. When the parent arrived to pick up the child, they were given child’s sippy cup, unaware that the cup contained soapy water. On the way home the two-year-old drank from the cup and began to pull their tongue, gasp for air, and turn red. The child was taken to seek professional medical attention.
