591-1-1-.03(9) · Rule 591-1-1-.03(9) requires staff shall not engage in, or allow children or other adults to engage in, activities that could be detrimental to a child’s health or well-being, such as but not limited to, horse play, rough play, wrestling, and picking up a child in a manner that could cause injury.
During an investigation, it was determined that on January 5, 2024, a two-year-old child was picked up by a staff member in a manner that caused an injury to the child’s left wrist. There were two staff members and seven children in the classroom. One staff member was assisting the children with a handprint activity. A second staff member went to get the two-year-old child to bring them to the activity. While transitioning the child to the art activity, the staff member bent down and held the left wrist of the two-year-old child while the child was in a seated position. While the two-year-old child was not completely standing, the staff member stood up and the child swung around the staff member and fell to the ground. The two-year-old child cried and was consoled. Later in the day the staff member noticed the child was not using their left hand during an activity. Upon pick up the child expressed discomfort when putting on their jacket. The parent immediately informed administrative staff of the child’s complaint. The child was taken for professional medical attention on January 5, 2024.
