10-09 · Child Discipline: DCF Handbook
A complaint allegation was received alleging that KT was hit by a teacher. The teacher hit the child twice on his shoulders on each side. The child moved back and the teacher hit him two more times. The teacher's name is Ms.Shaunette. The teacher was suspended by the Director (Kimberly Stanley) but the teacher is to return and the parent does not think the teacher should return to teach. The child stated that it happens "all the Time". A complaint inspection was conducted on 10/2/2024 and a statement from the director (K. Stanley) was received. Per the director, the teacher called her and told her what she did because she was not at the school when it happened. The next day, she reviewed the cameras and saw where the teacher hit the child with the palm of her hand. The teacher hit him on each shoulder, a total of 3 times. She stated that the teacher was suspended that day for a total of 10 days. They didn't feel she should be terminated being that this is the first incident they had with the teacher. Director was asked if she reviewed other days/hours to see if it has happened before to which she stated no. She went back and skimmed through after and notified me that no, she did not see her do this on any other occasion. Per the teacher, this was out of character in her part. She has asked for help before because the child is disruptive and has caused the other classmates to also misbehave. In this incident, she had done a lot of redirecting for this child and the incident happened in the afternoon. She felt so bad that she reported herself to the Director. Video footage reviewed and the following was observed; The teacher was seen raising her hand up and hitting him on each shoulder with the palm of her hand. As he walked away, she was seen raising her hand up again and slapping him a third time. The camera does not show where the third hit landed because the child was out of camera view. This complaint is substantiated and a non-compliance is being issued. Director was given technical assistance to provide more support to the teachers to prevent inappropriate discipline in the future
